Silver Photo Jewerly!

I personally am in love with this jewerly!  I love having my loved ones on my wrist to show off.  The quality is amazing and it’s all custom made.  I can do strerling silver bracelets, necklaces, rings, keychains, cuff links, and so much more!

There are some incredible pewter holiday ornaments I can do too!

Check this stuff out!

Jenn’s new headshots

I met Jenn many years ago when we were both photography students volunteering at the Imaging USA conference in San Antonio, TX.  I was living in Los Angeles, California  at the time and she was living in Arizona.  Now years later we both live in North Carolina.  Being a photographer herself, I was quite honored when Jenn asked me to update her business headshots for her.

Good luck Jenn with your new business, Next Door Properties!

Jackson Family Portraits

Know I know teenage boys aren’t too excited about doing family portraits…in the morning…on a Saturday.  But, when else can you get them all together at one time when one is about to graduate from high school (which he did a few hours after this shoot, Congratulations Ken!)  Kathy (the mom) and I hit it off right away, she and her company, Better World Organizing, even helped me organize my studio!  (Thanks Kathy, It looks great!)

This was Mom’s favorite because it captured their personalities.

To Good Health

So there is this amazing new magazine called To Good Health, and I just love it!  It’s all short articles on health related issues.  They pick a “champion of health” each month and highlight them.  This month, I was fortunate enough to get to shoot the cover of the magazine!  Johnson Price & Sprinkle PA where highlighted for their incredible wellness program.  This company really cares about being healthy!  Their programs have also built stronger bonds between their employees.  They not only work together but they play together as well.  I got to hang out with them at the climbing wall one afternoon then at the wollyball court on another afternoon.  They even let me play with them for a bit!  What a blast!

Stay tuned for the next issue of To Good Health and see who the next champion of health is!

A is for Amalia!

Amalia is an incredibly precocious and super social one and a half year old.  Despite being petite in stature she’s overflowing with personality.  It’s no surprise, it runs in her genes.  Dad is an actor who regularly performs at North Carolina Stage Company (Asheville’s favorite professional theatre) and has his own theatre company, The Redundant Theatre Company Theatre and Mom is incredibly involved in the community and runs her own gardening business, Grateful Design Gardens.  Here is a sample from our lifestyle portrait session.

VanCamp family portraits

The VanCamp Family Portraits! I had so much fun chasing Will through the gardens. He even rewarded me with a few goldfish! Mmmm!  How’d he know I love those crunchy cheesy treats!

This is probably my favorite from the session, it has the look of infrared film (which I miss so dearly, Kodak if you are reading, please bring back the HIE).

Will just loves his bear!

Will looks like such a little man in this picture!  So grown up!

My Vacation Photography

So we packed up the car, the kids, the dog, the bikes, the snacks, the car DVD player and pretty much everything else we could possible fit in the car (yes we are now in the market for a car top carrier) and headed to Georgia (in all it’s hot and humid glory) to visit my parents.  It was one delay after another right from the get go but once we did finally get going at a good highway cruising speed the newly promoted 7 year old (it was his actually birthday) tossed up his lunch.  Ahh, the joys of a family road trip! We took the kids to Lake Allatoona for some Kayaking and to the Tennessee Aquarium for some underwater adventure.  Here are a few photos of our family vacation.

Here’s the birthday boy opening his gifts!  Yippee!

The kids at the Tennessee Aquarium…if you haven’t been it’s wonderful and they’ve opened up a whole new salt water building since I was there last.

I think it’s kinda funny how the shark is looming in the background!

Inside the tank for a new perspective.

One of the tiniest sea horses I’ve ever seen!

This is a leafy sea dragon!  I am fascinated by these creatures.  I actually went scuba diving in Australia to look for them but alas I’ve only seen these mysterious creatures in the aquarium.

They had a butterfly exhibit too!  Thousands of butterflies flying around!

Don’t they look terrified?

Our little super kayaker!  We had to drag this boy out of the lake!

It wouldn’t be a family vacation with out a little family get together at the end!  Poor Jack, has already gone back to school, for the rest it’s looming near!

Sometimes you just need a good hug!

This family is just so gosh darn cute!  I love that they are all squishing in for a big o’ group hug!

When’s the last time you’ve had a family group hug?

Vacation Photography Tips

All right, so summer is here and the kids are out of school.  Now it’s time for a well earned vacation.  It seems as though everybody and their grandmother has a digital camera these days, and since most people don’t make prints anymore there is no “cost” for clicking away.  We often think more is better, but when it comes to taking pictures, more might simply just be that “more”.  This summer learn to take better vacation photos with these tips.

  1. If you are going to an attraction or event and you’re bringing the kids, take pictures of them when you first get there.  This is when they are happy and fresh and don’t have a chocolate double scoop ice cream cone down the front of them.
  2. Interact with your surroundings instead of just lining up in a straight line.  If you’re at the beach get the kids running from the waves.  Make it a game to get as close as you can without getting wet.
  3. Look twice, shoot once.  Look for distractions in your scene and see if you can crop them out by moving left / right or zooming in more.  That extra second will be well worth it.
  4. Don’t be afraid to get out of auto mode.  I shoot most often in aperture priority mode so I can control the depth of field.  I can decide if the person is in focus with a background that’s sharp as a tack, or artfully blurred out.
  5. Tell the whole story.  Introduce the story with an overview photo of the scene or establish what it is you are going to do.  If you are going to a National Park, get the welcome sign with a grove of trees.  If you are going to the beach try photographing the street leading up to the beach, just as you begin to see the ocean.  Make sure you show the action.  What did you do?  If you were at a neighborhood pool party shoot the kids doing a cannon ball and splashing around.  Show what you saw. If you are at the pier shoot some pictures of the street performers and vendors.   Show a row of fishing boats lined up at the dock.  Find something interesting to highlight with a unique perspective.  Look for interesting textures and color.  Maybe it’s a strand of fish tied up just coming off the boat, maybe it’s a close up of sand ripples in a tide pool.  Every story needs an ending, be sure to tell yours. Take a picture of packing up the car, the sun going down into the water, or deflating the beach ball.  Be creative and most importantly have fun!
  6. Now when you get home, don’t forget to upload or print you images. Just leaving them on the memory card in your camera is not going to help you remember your amazing vacation at all.  There are lots of great companies where you can upload your photos and share them with your friends and family like Shutterfly, Snapfish or Flickr.  And for those a bit more creative there are also websites that can help you create a digital scrapbook of your adventures.
